AXIS 57 is a dynamic center for artistic collaboration and innovation, inspired by the building types constructed for the Interbau 1957 in Berlin’s Hansaviertel. As a central hub where creativity converges and flows, AXIS 57 offers a coworking space for artists from various disciplines to create, share, and inspire one another.
01 CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
Drawing inspiration from the Interbau 57's vision, architecture types and materiality, Axis 57 creates a creatives co-working collective that unfolds the notion of creating a “city of tomorrow” in a contemporary way.
Compressed concrete, Urban Terrazzo, steel, slate, Objekte Unsere Tage fabric, and oak wood represent the main materials of the Axis 57 interior, reimagining the original Hansalibrary's materials in a contemporary way.
02 RECEPTION CAFÉ
Marked by a sculptural, compressed concrete structure, the reception café area offers visitors moments of relaxation, community interactions, and opportunities for displaying and observing creative works.
BALDESSARI. Café and gallery display tables inspired by Luciano Baldessari’s cross-shaped Bartningallee 5 and Alvar Aalto’s Klopstockstrasse 30-32.
The centerpiece of the new Hansalibrary co-working space is a compressed concrete structure that artfully combines forms inspired by the iconic Interbau 57 exhibition. Serving as both a reception and café, this centerpiece is designed to be the heart of the community and gallery space. It pays homage to the original Interbau 57 architectural style through form and material, linking past and present through design.
03 VISUAL & APPLIED ARTS WORKSPACE
Designed to be a collaborative area, the visual & applied arts space offers various seating options, adjustable furniture and lighting, as well as display areas to encourage and inspire.
WERNER. Meeting table inspired by Duettmann’s Kunstakademie gallery window & courtyard forms.
KUNST. Co-working tables inspired by the architectural forms and concepts of Duettmann’s Kunstakademie and Bartningallee buildings by Schwippert and Hassenpflug
GONDOLA. Inspired by the 1957 Interbau exhibition gondola, applying linoleum in a contemporary way and oerin flexible lighting soutions
STACK. Inspired by the original open-stack library shelving introduced by Werner Düttmann.
04 LITERARY ARTS WORKSPACE
In the literary arts workspace, a grid shelf – paying homage to the original Hansalibrary open stack bookshelves – creates a more secluded area for relaxed work, while tables with a view to the courtyard offers opportunities for more interactive moments.
NIEMEYER. Armchairs that combine the forms of Kreuer’s St. Ansgar Church and Oscar Niemeyer’s Altonaer Strasse underconstruction.
ALTONAER. Community tables with integrated planter, inspired by Paul Baumgarten’s Altonaer Strasse slab highrise & Johannes Krahn’s Händelallee bungalows.
05 WORKSHOP SPACE & RECUPERATION ZONE
The workshop space opens space for meetings and collaborations, featuring Interbau 57-inspired stackable tables that allow for greater flexibility.
LUCIANO. Stackable workshop tables that abstract the cross layout of Baldessari’s Bartningallee 5 apartments.
Nestled into the corner of the building, the recuperation zone offers a space for creative breaks and reflection.
BUNGALOW. Interbau 57 bungalow inspired loungers.
06 EXTERIOR GALLERY
An exterior veranda with an overhead grid structure, creates an outdoor exhibition space. Inspired by the Interbau 57 exhibition and observation crane structures, this grid extension aims to pull attention to the original hansalibrary architecture while offering opportunity for a shared dialogue through exhibitions.
ARCUS. Outdoor solo tables, inspired by the forms integrated into Willy Kreuer’s St. Ansgar.
ALT. Courtyard coffee tables inspired by the bungalow structures of Baumgarten, Ruf and Krahn.
HANSA. Hansalibrary-inspired outdoor seating with integrated planter channel, creating a central courtyard point that offers varying sightlines for perspective shifts and inspiration.
